Sailing to Africa

Sometimes it’s just good to see land! Although it’s only been 10 days since we left Reunion Island, the continent of Africa lies ahead, and I am thrilled to see it. So much so that I had to get a picture of it before the sun sets. Africa, the only continent I haven’t visited to date. It doesn’t matter that by the time we get there it will be dark.   Even out here at sea, a couple of hours away, I can smell it, sweet African earth, the bushveld is wafting out across the Indian Ocean.

The sighting of land is also particularly welcome after the challenges of this last leg of the Indian Ocean. Wicked currents and constantly shifting winds that had us have to heave to just one day out of Reunion, sail in the wrong direction on another day (SE), and resulted in daily and sometimes multiply daily sail changes since the wind in this part of the world seems to enjoy doing counterclockwise 360’s on a daily basis. It’s gotten old already!

But alas,  after 12 weeks since flying into Fji, 7,800 nautical miles (10,005 miles), 1 complete ocean (Indian) and 1 partial (Pacific), Richards Bay, South Africa is just ahead of us. Wowee!
